BY MARKUS SCHLEINZER

Amidst the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, somewhere in Germany, a mysterious soldier appears in a secluded Protestant village. Small and quiet, his face disfigured by a scar, this stranger declares himself the heir of a long-abandoned farmstead and produces a document to support his claim to the suspicious villagers. With time, he overcomes their doubts and shows himself to be a hard-working, God-fearing man, becoming part of the community in a quest for acceptance made up of impossible deceit. The true and twisted tale of a deceiver of land and folk, who, defying her birth as a woman, comported herself as a man and committed many a wicked deed.

BY RUTH BECKERMANN

Opened at the cusp of Africa’s defining 1960s by controversial Emperor Haile Selassie, Hilton Addis Ababa stands today as a grand hotel, much like any other. Settling in the hotel in Ethiopia’s sprawling capital, Ruth Beckermann delves into the nation’s thorny past and present, navigating the familiar and foreign, fact and fiction. As her quest for historical truth unfolds, layered with contradictions, she blends archives starring the Emperor with present-day conversations at the hotel and her own reflections as a European woman. Meanwhile, outside, the opulence contrasts with the city’s unvarnished life and grind, with queues of workers stretching for metres at bus stops and skeletons of high-rises awaiting development.

Bobby drives back and forth between Vienna and Salzburg, picking up strangers along the way and sharing conversations that drift from the everyday to the deeply personal. In this tender portrait of today's Europe, anonymity and warmth still go hand in hand.
